What accounting should be

The new President of the Bureau of the Quebec CMA Order says 2007-2008 will be marked by renewed vitality

Richard Désy, FCMA, President, Heliodor Capital Intellectuel inc., who was named President of the Bureau of the Quebec CMA Order just a few days ago, has announced that a more intense positioning strategy for the profession will be at the center of his action priorities for 2007-2008. It is from this perspective that he and his team intend to focus on two particularly strategic issues during his term, which include the consolidation of the profession’s leadership, both with employers and students, and public accounting.

“In a burgeoning market where the effects of demographic change will be felt for some time yet, the Order will double its efforts to best satisfy the demand on the profession, without compromising quality, which bodes very well for our future.” It was in these terms that the new President expressed how important it is to strengthen ties with employers, which he also intends to include more in supervising and evaluating the practical work experiences of candidates to the profession. Likewise, in an effort to make the search for practical work experiences easier for candidates to the CMA profession and aware of the succession needs of the many organizations facing an aging workforce and a shortage of resources in the financial management field, “the Order will strengthen its partnership with employers in search of young talents by increasing initiatives to encourage the hiring of CMAs and promoting its loyal hiring partners,” states Mr. Désy.

In addition, with market globalization forcing businesses to question their processes, competitiveness is the key issue. In the President’s opinion, it is clear that this situation has only helped position management accounting and CMAs at the forefront of the accounting profession “since,” he says, “businesses are increasingly looking for accounting professionals capable of thinking beyond standard compliance and established rules. That leaves a lot of room for CMAs.” The hallmark CMA Strategic Leadership Program was very recently remodeled in line with this changing context. The CMA competency map, adopted in 2005 and designed to reflect the real needs expressed by businesses, has served as the foundation for the update of the program whose first cohort will begin this fall. “Our objective is to prepare future CMAs to play their role as true business partners better than ever and thus contribute to the creation of value and collective wealth,” Richard Désy emphasizes.

Although the new political dynamic resulting from the election of a minority government in Quebec is not making public accounting a government priority, the Order will nevertheless continue to make politicians aware of the importance of the issues at stake. “Bill 64 died on the Order Paper, but the debate is far from over,” Mr. Désy reiterates. “We will continue, just as we did when the bill was being tabled, to vigorously reject the idea of framing the practice of public accounting in the Chartered Accountants Act, as proposed in the bill whose objective, ironically, was to put an end to the CA monopoly over public accounting.” Richard Désy says he is firmly convinced that Quebec will not be able to indefinitely escape from the necessity of updating the framework of the accounting profession in a way that fully respects the three groups that form it.

The President of the Bureau of the Order will be assisted in achieving his priorities by the other members of the newly elected Administrative Committee, who are Vice President Claude Paul-Hus, CMA, General Manager, Société québécoise d’information juridique, Treasurer Joanne Couture, CMA, Senior Account Manager, Export Development Canada, elected director Marie-Andrée Giroux, CMA, Corporate Controller, Roche Ltd., Consulting Group, director appointed by the Office des professions, Louis Renaud, Director - Quebec, Real Estate Management, SITQ, and finally, President and Executive Director of the Order François Renauld, FCMA.

The Ordre des comptables en management accrédités du Québec consists of more than 8,400 certified members and candidates to the profession. CMAs create value within organizations using an integrated and systematic approach to strategic and financial management.
