The Chair of the Board of Directors of the Québec CMA Order announces his action priorities for 2009-2010
Montreal, June 19, 2009 – Re-elected Chair of the Board of Directors of the Ordre des comptables en management accrédités du Québec (CMA) for 2009-2010, Claude Paul-Hus, FCMA, General Manager of the Société québécoise d’information juridique (SOQUIJ), has announced that 2009-2010 will be marked by the goal of continuity and the determination to ensure that the Order plays its full leadership role in the field of management accounting.
“Attracting a critical mass of quality candidates to the profession, providing high-calibre training, updating all competencies of CMA professionals and finally, improving the reputation of and familiarity with the CMA designation are the major orientations that will guide our actions and initiatives in the year we are now beginning,” declared the Chair of the Board.
Promoting excellence in the next generation
After posting a 26% increase in candidate registrations on the regular path in 2007-2008, the Order repeated this feat in 2008-2009 with another 25% increase. This increase will definitely draw even more attention to the growth in the Order’s membership in the coming years. Thus, starting in 2011-2012, the Order will enjoy an annual number of new graduates that fluctuates around 500. For that reason, major efforts will continue to be made this year to support this growth and stimulate interest in the CMA profession in pre-university and university environments, the business community and with employers.
The Foundation of the Order, which began its activities last year, will also be in the spotlight. “In a context where there is a growing shortage of workers, the success of businesses depends on sound management of human resources and future workers. The Foundation will make it possible to attract more students to accounting programs, promote the CMA profession and help it set itself apart in the field, while providing the next generation of CMAs with the means to achieve their full potential,” explains Claude Paul-Hus.
Improving competencies
A year ago, the Order had announced the institution of mandatory professional development for all CMAs in order to ensure both the general public and employers a practice worthy of the professional CMA designation. Therefore, in the coming months, a structured identification and validation process for the professional development needs of members will be implemented. In addition, the current Professional Development Catalogue will be revised and a new catalogue that is better harmonized with the CMA Competency Map will be developed. Finally, members will be guided and supervised as they improve their competencies.
Implementing the public accountancy permit issuance process
As for Bill 42, which came into force on December 15 and officially ended the CA monopoly over public accountancy, the Order continued to work hard last year on implementing all the processes necessary to make the lawmakers’ intention of giving CMAs full practice rights in public accountancy a reality. Thus, “the Office des professions du Québec recently gave its approval to the three basic regulations that will allow the Order to issue its first public accountancy permits to CMAs who satisfy the requirements, and we expect the government to follow suit in the coming weeks. As a result, 2009-2010 will allow us to begin the evaluation process for the first permit applications. We are ready!” adds Mr. Paul-Hus.
The Chair of the Board of the Order will be assisted in achieving his priorities by the other members of the Executive Committee, including: Vice Chair Marie-Andrée Giroux, CMA, Senior Consultant, CGI inc., Treasurer Charles Auger, FCMA, General Manager, Iron Mountain Canada, Elected Director Nathalie Houle, CMA, Director, Management Information, Desjardins Group, Appointed Director Nelly Rodrigue, Lawyer, Secretary and Director of Legal Services, Société des établissements de plein air du Québec (Sépaq), and finally, Secretary François Renauld, FCMA, President-Executive Director of the Order.
