New CMA-MBA Executive Program offered by UQAR at Lévis campus

Lévis, February 10, 2010 - UQAR is signing agreements with UQAM’s School of Management (ESG UQAM) and the Ordre des comptables en management accrédités du Québec (CMA) to become the exclusive provider of the CMA-MBA Executive Program at its Lévis campus in the greater Quebec City region starting in fall 2010. This graduate program allows working managers to earn the CMA designation at the same time as a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. To be eligible for the program, candidates must have an undergraduate degree and five years of management or accounting-related experience.

The CMA-MBA Executive Program has two steps. First, students must complete all courses in the DESS, an advanced graduate degree program, in management accounting, which includes all accounting training covered by the CMA Entrance Examination. Then, students enrol in eight courses of the MBA program, which equals six of the seven modules of the Order’s training program, the CMA Strategic Leadership Program (SLP). Once they have completed these two steps, students earn their MBA degree. To earn the CMA designation, they simply need to complete the 7th module of the SLP.

The partnership between UQAR and ESG UQAM began in 2001 with the signing of the memorandum of understanding that expanded the general MBA program for managers to the Lévis campus. This program, which was an instant hit with business professionals in the region, now has 158 graduates to its credit. The memorandum of understanding signed today by UQAR and ESG UQAM adds the specialized accounting path of the MBA program as well as the DESS to the range of programs offered at the Lévis campus.

The memorandum of understanding signed today by UQAR and the CMA Order, recognizes the equivalence of the steps in the CMA accreditation process and the educational activities that will be offered at the Lévis campus. “This agreement reflects our mutual desire to meet the market demand for manager training,” said the Chair of the Order’s Board of Directors, Claude Paul-Hus, FCMA. “We are very optimistic about the new prospects that it will create, given the very promising potential of the region and the undeniable appeal of this unique combination of training.” The memorandum of understanding also stipulates that the Order will provide leadership in promoting the CMA-MBA Executive Program and recruiting candidates. For admission to the program, the Order will perform a preliminary review of each candidate’s application file and then recommend the candidates with the best chances of admission to UQAR.

The CMA-MBA Executive Program is offered by UQAR exclusively at its Lévis campus for the Quebec City, Chaudière-Appalaches and Bas-Saint-Laurent regions. Robert Paré, Vice President, Planning and Partnerships, of the Lévis campus noted that “this is a concrete example of partnerships that enable UQAR to contribute to the development of people and organizations throughout eastern Quebec.”

The memorandum of understanding between UQAR and ESG UQAM was signed by Jean-Pierre Ouellet, Vice President of Education and Research at UQAR, and Robert H Desmarteau, Director of the Master of Business Administration program (without dissertation) at UQAM’s School of Management. The agreement between UQAR and the CMA Order was made official by Claude Paul-Hus, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Quebec CMA Order, and Robert Paré, Vice President of Planning and Partnerships of UQAR’s Lévis campus.
